Reel Length Limits Compared: Instagram vs TikTok vs YouTube Shorts vs Facebook

One podcast episode. Four platforms. Four different length limits. If you’re repurposing the same recording across Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Reels, checking each platform separately gets old fast — so here’s all four, side by side, pulled from the same verified data behind our individual length checkers.

Every number below is sourced from the same place as our platform-specific tools — nothing here is a new figure, just the same verified data in one table.

Length Limits Compared at a Glance

PlatformMax lengthMin lengthIdeal range
Instagram Reels20 minutes (uploaded video, rolling out) — 3 minutes if recorded in-app3s15-30 seconds for the best reach with new viewers
TikTok60 minutes (uploaded from device) — 10 minutes if recorded in-app3s21-34 seconds for the best completion rate
YouTube Shorts3 minutesNo stated minimum15-60 seconds for the best completion rate
Facebook ReelsNo fixed maximum (as of June 2025)No stated minimum15-30 seconds for reach, consistent with other short-form Reels placements

Each platform name in the table links to its dedicated checker page, which also includes a free clip-count calculator.

What Each Platform’s Caveat Actually Means

  • Instagram Reels: Reels recorded directly in the in-app camera are capped at 3 minutes; the 20-minute ceiling only applies to video you upload from your device, and is still rolling out account by account.
  • TikTok: Videos recorded directly in the TikTok app camera are capped at 10 minutes; the 60-minute ceiling only applies to video uploaded from your device gallery.
  • YouTube Shorts: Most licensed music can be used for up to 90 seconds within a 3-minute Short; some tracks are restricted to 60 or 30 seconds by the rights holder.
  • Facebook Reels: As of June 2025, Meta removed Facebook Reels' length and format restrictions — all video shared to Facebook is now published through a single, unified Reels creation flow with no fixed length cap.

Don’t Forget the Safe Zone

Length is only half the picture. Every one of these platforms also overlays its own header, caption, and action icons on top of your video — so a clip that fits the length limit can still get its caption hidden if you don’t check the safe zone too:

Checking four length limits and four safe zones for every episode doesn’t scale — that’s exactly the problem Pod2Reels solves. Paste a podcast episode or long-form video, and it identifies the best moments and automatically cuts correctly-sized, captioned, safe-zone-aware clips for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Reels — one episode in, the right clip for every platform out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which short-form platform allows the longest video?

TikTok currently allows the longest upload at 60 minutes (uploaded from device) — 10 minutes if recorded in-app, ahead of Instagram Reels (20 minutes (uploaded video, rolling out) — 3 minutes if recorded in-app) and YouTube Shorts (3 minutes). Facebook Reels is a special case: "No fixed maximum (as of June 2025)" means there's no stated ceiling at all.

Which platform has the shortest length limit?

YouTube Shorts has the lowest hard ceiling at a flat 3 minutes — every other platform allows longer uploads depending on how you create the video.

What's the safest length to use across all four platforms?

Aim for the 15-30 second range — it clears every platform's minimum and sits inside each one's own ideal range for engagement (Instagram: 15-30 seconds for the best reach with new viewers; TikTok: 21-34 seconds for the best completion rate; YouTube Shorts: 15-60 seconds for the best completion rate; Facebook Reels: 15-30 seconds for reach, consistent with other short-form Reels placements).

Do these length limits apply to paid ads too?

No — each platform's paid-ad specs are generally more restrictive than the organic limits covered here. Always check ad specs separately if you're running paid creative.

How often do these length limits change?

More often than most guides get updated — Facebook Reels alone changed its rule more than once before Meta removed the cap entirely in June 2025. Each length checker page shows a "last verified" date so you can see how current the number is.

How do I turn one podcast episode into clips for all four platforms?

Pod2Reels does this automatically — paste a podcast episode or long-form video and it identifies the best moments and cuts correctly-sized, captioned clips for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Reels in one pass. Or use the clip-count calculator on any length checker page to plan it yourself.
