YouTube shows your Short’s 9:16 thumbnail on several surfaces, and some of them reframe it. The table shows how much of a 1080×1920 thumbnail each view keeps. The 16:9 search view is labelled “may vary” and left out of the text-safe area, because sources disagree on whether search crops the thumbnail or shows it whole inside a 16:9 container.

Only on some channels so far. YouTube started rolling out custom Shorts thumbnails on 24 July 2026, to YouTube Partner Program creators first. Channels that don’t have it yet can only pick a frame from the video — which is why the checker also lets you pick a video frame instead of an image.
