CPM ranges are typical industry figures, not quotes — Data from Sep 2026 — source. Published data for announcer-read ads doesn't reliably break out by placement the way host-read does — the same range is used for all three slots rather than inventing a split.
A small, engaged audience that actually acts on what you recommend monetizes better — and is more sustainable — than a large, disengaged one. Revenue potential isn't only about download count.
Podcast ad revenue = (downloads ÷ 1,000) × CPM per slot, summed across every ad you run and multiplied by episodes per month — typically 18-40 CPM depending on placement and type (Data from Sep 2026). Enter your numbers below for a monthly and yearly range, not a guess.
Not sure how your downloads compare?
Check the download benchmark tab, or look at typical CPM rates by slot and ad type.
Growth mostly comes from promotion — repurposing your episode into short clips is one lever.
How much money can a podcast actually make from ads?
It depends almost entirely on downloads and how many ad slots you run — there's no flat number. A show with a few thousand downloads per episode running one host-read mid-roll (typically 25-40 CPM) makes a very different amount than one running three slots across pre/mid/post. Enter your own numbers above for a real range instead of a generic claim.
Why does the calculator give a range instead of one number?
Because CPM itself is a range, not a fixed price — actual rates depend on your niche, audience, and the specific advertiser relationship. A single "you'll make $X" number would be more precise-looking than the underlying data actually supports.
How much more would I make if my downloads doubled?
Revenue scales roughly linearly with downloads at a fixed CPM, so doubling downloads roughly doubles ad revenue from the same slots — the calculator shows this directly as a "what changes if downloads double" figure. In practice, growth can also unlock the ability to raise your CPM as you cross size thresholds advertisers care about.
Is ad revenue the only way podcasts make money?
No — many shows make more from listener memberships/Patreon, digital products, coaching, or affiliate deals than from ad CPM, especially at smaller download counts. This calculator only covers ad revenue since that's the piece with an actual published rate to calculate from.
Do I need a certain number of downloads before I can start monetizing?
No fixed threshold, but most ad networks and sponsors look for a consistent few thousand downloads per episode before reaching out. Below that, direct sponsorships, affiliate links, and listener support tend to work better than waiting for CPM-based ad deals.
